Welcome to the Merchant Taylors’ School City & Business Network

Welcome to our Networking Reception for the City and Business Network, hosted this evening by Dominic Mac and PwC. We are very grateful for the support given by Dom and his team, particularly Susan Kirk, who have welcomed us so generously and helped with the organisation of the event. I am sorry I am not able to be present this evening, but I know it will be a successful and hugely valuable evening for everyone in attendance. The City and Business Network was established some years ago, followed by the biennial Medics’ Convention and, in the past, a group for STEM and the Arts and Creative Industries. Connections made through these groups have the potential to provide real value to the Merchant Taylors’ community of pupils, staff, OMTs, parents, and friends. In some cases, these connections have led to new jobs, expanded business networks, and simply making new friends and catching up with familiar faces from the school. Online, please remember that you can enhance your connections through membership of the NetCommunity, available through the website, by connecting with the school LinkedIn profile, Thomas White, and, for the OMTs, making sure your LinkedIn education profile is up to date. Independent schools are very much in the crosshairs of the government, but our school is a flourishing community of boys, staff, OMTs, parents, and supporters. We thrive on the support we give each other and can do so much beyond school because of our community. One example of this is the City and Business Network, but I could pick so many areas. In short, it is in all the lives enhanced by the boys who leave this school as well-rounded, confident, loyal, and resilient OMTs. You will be aware of the demand to attend the reception this evening, clearly showing the value placed on the connections made through the school. On that note, you will find a list at the back of this booklet of some of the other events we have coming up that may be of interest to you. When you leave this evening, please consider how you might help the school achieve its aims. It might be supporting our Careers Department events, such as the Upper Sixth interview week in January, or supporting the Friends of Merchant Taylors’ events at school. It may even be to help the school host more networking events like this one. If you are keen to help us open access to the school for bursary recipients, or to help a pupil remain at school in cases of financial hardship, the Development Office team is your first port of call. “Ace that Interview” Week Thursday 16 th and 17 th January 2025

Preparing pupils to perform well in interviews is a crucial element of our Careers education and support programme. This year, we are introducing a new Upper Sixth initiative to achieve this, and we are recruiting volunteers with experience in interviewing, ideally for internship, graduate, or apprenticeship roles.
