TAYLORIAN 2024 SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES

Chess Club

I ’m proud to say that Chess Club has seen major progress this year; we have competed in a host of internal and external competitions. After an intense two-month tournament in the Autumn Term, the official MTS Chess Team was established, comprising ten of the school’s elite chess players. In December House Chess was, as always, strongly contested with a total of seventy-two players and seven matches played across three rounds. Mulcaster overcame reigning champions White House to become the new force in school chess. The MTS Chess Team competed in our first external tournament last term at Harrow School, where we finished third in the team

rankings after a gruelling twelve rounds and lots of strong individual performances. Since then, we have also participated in online chess ‘battles’ against other schools most Fridays after school, and we have performed at a consistently high standard. The inaugural MTS Chess Championship is currently taking place, with the final between Austin Ivan and me. There are many more tournaments on the horizon, such as the National Schools Chess Championships. After the progress made this year, we are in a great position for them. Josh Gill (5ths)
