Concordia Winter 2022
Merchant Taylors’ School and the Royal Family
Whilst this may have gone over the heads of the junior boys, her invitation to the Head Master to grant a day’s holiday to mark the visit may well have gone down better. Donald Coggan, OMT, the Archbishop of Canterbury was in attendance and pronounced a blessing on the new buildings. With this, The Queen Mother opened the new Music Department and listened to a recital. The visit took in several classes and a chance to meet boys and monitors over tea in the Head Master’s house. Merchant Taylors’ School has enjoyed the support of the Royal Family over the course of the twentieth century and one might reflect that it was a golden era for both the House of Windsor and the school. As Queen Elizabeth is laid to rest, we give thanks for the role that her family has played in our illustrious history. Jonny Taylor Registrar & History Master
