News fromMerchant Taylors’

ISI Inspection In the summer term, the Independent Inspectorate Schools report on Merchant Taylors' was published. Following their inspection before half-term the Inspectors were fulsome in their praise for the quality of education that the school provides and the wonderfully positive dynamic that runs through life at Sandy Lodge. The Inspectors noted a number of major strengths of the school, some of which are highlighted in the excerpts below: "Pupils make rapid progress in their academic studies. This is a result of a strong desire to succeed in public examinations combined with high expectations from teachers ..." "There is a culture in the school where pupils are confident to speak out on intellectual matters and display mature skills of reflection. This is supported by a skilled staff body who teach with pace and high expectations." "Pupils are at ease using technology on a day-to-day basis to help their organisation and to extend their learning, as a result of gaining a very good grounding in ICT." "The pupils’ social awareness and ability to work effectively with others is excellent." "Pupils are exceptionally well driven to succeed, and this motivates them to work hard." "The school offers grounds which are well used beyond the classroom as an environment that helps pupils to be calm and create opportunities to stop and think."

Sixth Former commended in Trinity College Prize

President of the MTS Law Society, Dawud Esmail (U6) was commended in the prestigious Robert Walker Law Essay Prize run by Trinity College, Cambridge. Dawud was given the task of considering the responsibilities in connection with the environment and sustainability the law should assign to owners and occupiers of land. Dawud argued that freedom to use one's land in any way seen fit must be balanced by appropriate regard for the future of the planet and that current legal provisions were too heavily weighted in favour of free use. The judges particularly commended Dawud on his proposals regarding the allocating of responsibility between those with various different interests in land.
