Katerina is a scientist investigating the relationship between microbes and plants. She is trying to find out more about these microbes and how they break down chemicals like complex phosphate compounds and serve them for the plants in a much simpler form. To figure this out Katerina uses a mix of techniques from biology such as microbial culturing (isolating and growing specific microbes in controlled environments), DNA extractions (to understand the genetic makeup of the microbes), and also bioinformatics and statistics (to understand and make use of the collected experimental data).
