Science was more my forte and now I’ve gone full circle, I have the pleasure of coming back to MTS to write about health. So please don’t expect any onomatopoeic or declamatory sentences, just a truly compendius style (yep had to look those up too!). Over the coming articles I hope to muster up some interest and build an atmosphere of health awareness in all our readers. In this article I digest the information from a New England Journal of Medicine article and aim to restore your faith in the health benefits of that perfect cup of coffee - …but of course as always…in moderation! So here they are. Alertness and energy levels increase by blocking the ad nosine receptors. Vigilance improves especially for long duration tasks, however this cannot compensate for the decline in performance after sleep deprivation Basal Metabolic Rate increases with regular intake leading upto a 5% increase in energy expenditure and a reduced long-term weight gain Diabetes risk can reduce with habitual consumption Cardiovascular disease risk is reduced with the lowest risk occurring at 3-5 cups/day Gallstone / Liver disease (cirrhosis/fibrosis) risk is reduced THE GAINS

Cancer risk of some cancers has an inverse association with coffee consumption - including prostate, skin, breast, prostate and womb cancers (for our female readers of course!) Parkinson’s disease risk is reduced Depression risk is reduced Death rates are lower at a consumption of 2-5 cups a day Reduced reaction time Reduced quality of sleep Increased anxiety, especially at >200mg per occasion or >400mg/d Rambling flow of thought LDL cholesterol (the “bad” one) increases - especially with unfiltered coffee (French press or Turkish) - a bit better with espressos Liver cancer risk can increase Withdrawal symptoms on stopping habitual coffee drinking - headache, fatigue, reduced alertness, depressed mood, flu-like symptoms (peak day 2, and last 2-9 days) Of course medicine is rarely so straightforward as the risks of caffeine are certainly present, including: KEY POINT - I am of course not advocating that you rush down to your local Starbucks, and if you are, please at least go and find some decent coffee (if you must, my recommendation would be Coopers Roastery, Marlow!). I am simply stating that a moderate consumption of coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle.
