Michael Peters
(1955–1959)
Michael married Sue in 1976 and they, and subsequently their son and daughter, lived in Northwood until the lure of Devon proved too great and the family moved to Budleigh Salterton to which Michael commuted at weekends. On some weekdays Michael lived at Durrants with other illustrious resident OMTs. After he retired, Michael and Sue spent many happy years in Budleigh in a delightful house on the cliffs with a fine garden, and wicked dog. Michael concentrated on sports that better suited his athletic inclinations (and dodgy knee): bridge and croquet (he became a strong club player) and zealously followed rugby and cricket on television. In failing health, Michael moved in 2020 to Harpenden, where he died some four years later. He is survived by Sue, Jamie and Julia and their families. Robert J. Peters (1961–1966)
Michael was born in 1942. His childhood and early adult years were spent in Wembley Park, from where he commuted to attend Northwood Prep and then Merchant Taylors’ School. After negotiating Merchant Taylors’ on the Classical side, he took up articles in his father’s small solicitors’ firm in Chancery Lane, where he qualified and remained as an assistant, then partner, all his working life. The firm grew somewhat through amalgamations and eventually became part of the prestigious company of Charles Russell (who had spotted Michael’s talent — and his firm’s office space). Michael was in Spenser House. He was an accomplished squash player at School and with the OMTs. He had excellent racket skills and an imperceptible movement off the tee, mirroring his renowned agility on the cricket field playing for a variety of OMT sides, notably Ascot’s 4th XI and on numerous Thames and other tours. For many years Michael’s social life was centred on Durrants — something the Hertfordshire and Middlesex traffic police never adequately monitored.
