Robert Brockbank
(1965–1972)
Robert enjoyed his time at Merchant Taylors’. His life-long love of sailing and outward-bound adventures began with the MTS sailing team, Venture Scouts and the Silver & Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Robert was awarded an Exhibition to study Engineering Science at University College Oxford and achieved a double first. He then joined the Post Office Research Station (later BT). His work took him to the USA to oversee transatlantic cables, and to cable ships off the coast of Scotland to test for faults in the new fibre-optic cables with equipment that he had designed. His team received the Queen’s Award for his work on testing optical components. He also co-wrote many patents and journal articles on the introduction of ClickDial technology. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, daughters Ruth and Anna and grandchildren Iris and Henry. Jill Schofield
