Upper Third Form Sustainability Trip to Pembrokeshire
T he first day of our trip to to a rocky beach. But this wasn’t just a day at the seaside; it was a hands-on sustainability walk. Armed with bags and determination, we scoured the rocks for pesky plastic. Did you know the UK produces fiYe million tons of plastic each year, 75% of which is not recyclable?! We also dipped our toes into the bracing waves and walked up the steep cliffs like modern-day explorers. Learning about sustainability had never been this exhilarating. Afterwards, we were taken coasteering (a form of rocky coastline exploration involving climbing, jumping into the sea and swimming). The only downside was the not-so-flattering wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids. The next day we set sail for Ramsey Island, a pristine natural haven. We gazed upon playful seals (though at the time most of them were sleeping, camouflaged, and looked more like fat rocks than seals) and whimsical sea birds. The waves were twisting, raging monsters, making our boat (and my stomach) jump, swirl, and roll, but the wind and spray rushing against our skin was so exhilarating. Later that day we had a ‘seaweed talk’, learning how to be sustainable with seaweed, including its diverse types and which are safe to eat. After this we had some free time on a beach – sandy this time – and as I stood Pembrokeshire was a whirlwind of excitement as we ventured

Join their cause and explore the treasure trove of local offerings. Feast on Sustainability: Your quest for sustainable eating can be an epic adventure. Choose plant-based delicacies over meaty feasts and opt for local, seasonal delights. This way, you’ll support sustainable food practices and savour the bounties of the land. I pledge to carry this newfound wisdom into my daily life, and I invite you to embark on your own sustainable adventure. Together, we can be champions of a greener, more responsible world. facing some strong winds and waves, I felt strong and joyous, and the best I had felt in quite a while. The following day we went to the bug farm, where we held cockroaches and allowed stick insects to just crawl over us, before heading over to the bug kitchen where we dared to taste insects! Surprisingly, these little critters turned out to be delicious and nutritious, and a whole new world of protein was laid bare before us. Pembrokeshire, with its breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and passionate inhabitants, radiates the essence of sustainability. I gathered some valuable insights that I’m thrilled to share with you: Banish Single-Use Plastics: Plastic pollution is a fierce dragon, and Pembrokeshire is its battlefield. Embrace your role as a sustainability warrior by wielding reusable bags and water bottles. Defeat the single-use plastic scourge one refusal at a time.
